Behind the Scenes: Baymeadows Movers Teams Up with Chipman and OMA to Take Out Legacy Equipment from AMC Theatres
Most moviegoers walk into a movie theater focused on the movie they're about to watch. They notice the giant screen, plush seats, and maybe the smell of freshly popped popcorn. What they don't see is everything happening behind the scenes to make that experience possible—or what it takes when it's time to replace decades of gear and make room for the future.
Not long ago, Baymeadows Movers had the opportunity to partner with Chipman Relocation & Logistics on a one-of-a-kind commercial moving project through our membership in the Office Moving Alliance (OMA). As a team, we supported the removal of older projection equipment from several AMC Theatre locations. It was not your standard commercial move. It called for careful planning, specialized equipment, experienced crews, and seamless coordination between dependable relocation partners.
Projects like these are part of why we love what we do. No two commercial moves are exactly the same, and that's what makes our work exciting.
Every Commercial Move Has a Story
Among the finest parts of commercial moving is the range of work.
One week we're relocating an entire school before students come back for the new year. The next we're transporting physical therapy equipment to a new healthcare facility. Next we find ourselves inside a movie theater, meticulously taking apart and hauling out equipment that has entertained millions of people over the years.
This AMC project was notably memorable because it required removing large digital cinema projection systems, along with several pieces of historic 35mm projection equipment. Walking into the projection booths felt like going back in time. Some of the film projectors and reels had been part of the movie-going experience long before digital projection became the standard in the industry.
For film lovers, it was riveting.
For our crew, it was a reminder that every piece of equipment we move carries its own history.
Great Projects Start with Careful Planning
Projects like this don't start when the moving truck arrives.
Long before the first projector is unplugged, our team carefully coordinates logistics, scheduling, entry points, equipment requirements, manpower, and safety planning.
Partnering with Chipman Relocation & Logistics, we managed every phase of the project to make sure each theater could be completed efficiently and safely. One of the biggest benefits of being part of the Office Moving Alliance (OMA) is gaining access to a nationwide network of seasoned commercial movers who uphold the same commitment to professionalism and customer service. By blending Chipman's national relocation expertise with Baymeadows Movers' local knowledge and project management experience, we were able to execute the work seamlessly from start to finish.
Movie theaters weren't constructed with equipment removal in mind.
Projection rooms are often tucked away on upper levels with narrow hallways, constricted doorways, and restricted access. A few sites have elevators, whereas others do not. Relocating large projection systems through those spaces involves much more than simply putting them on a dolly and heading for the truck.
Every challenge has to be anticipated before any work begins.
That's when experience makes all the difference.
It's All About More Than Brute Strength
People often assume moving heavy equipment is purely about brute strength.
The honest truth is that commercial moving is about planning, technique, and using the right tools for the job.
Projects like the AMC equipment removal demand specialized dollies, rigging equipment, lift systems, protective materials, and experienced crews who know how to carefully maneuver oversized equipment through tight spaces.
Each projector had to be carefully disconnected, protected, maneuvered through the building, and safely loaded for transport.
A lot of these systems are not only heavy—they're also highly delicate. One accidental bump into a doorway or uneven transition could result in significant damage.
Communication and patience are every bit as important as raw strength.
Preserving the Building Is Just as Important
While our focus is on safely moving equipment, we're equally committed to protecting the customer's facility.
Commercial structures represent a sizable investment, and even modest repairs can become costly and disruptive.
When a job is finished, our goal is for customers to remember how smoothly everything went, not the moving process itself.
Team Effort Makes the Difference
Large commercial moving projects are never a solo undertaking.
Each member of the crew has a role, and communication is critical from start to finish.
One person may be maneuvering equipment through a doorway while another stabilizes the load. Someone else is watching clearances, while another crew member is prepping the next piece for transport.
When veteran crews work as a team, there's a rhythm that develops. That's a skill that can't be taught overnight.
Seeing our crew work together was a powerful example of what happens when experienced movers share the same commitment to safety, communication, and customer service.
A Little Levity Along the Way
Even during demanding commercial projects, it's important to enjoy the experience.
Working inside movie theaters certainly had its perks.
Our team couldn't resist heading downstairs for a few movie snacks in between jobs on the project. After spending the day behind the scenes where not many people ever get to go, popcorn somehow tasted even better.
Such moments help make long workdays memorable and remind us that while we take our work seriously, we also love what we do.
Commercial Moving Is More Than Just Transportation
Most people assume moving companies simply load trucks and unload them at another location.
Commercial moving is far more than that.
These engagements often involve logistics planning, inventory management, warehousing, project management, scheduling, specialized equipment handling, and coordinating several contractors.
Each customer has different needs.
Some businesses need to relocate hundreds of employees over a weekend.
Others need sensitive medical equipment moved without disruption.
Certain projects take place overnight to limit downtime.
Others—like the AMC project—involve the careful removal of specialized equipment from unique environments.
Each project calls for adaptability, planning, and problem solving.
At Baymeadows Movers, when someone asks, "Can you help with this?" our first instinct is almost always, "Let's figure out how."
Hands-On Experience Builds Confidence
For decades, Baymeadows Movers has proudly served Jacksonville and Northeast Florida, and we've learned that smooth projects all rely on the same basics:
Preparation.
Communication.
Professionalism.
Trust.
Our customers know we'll come ready, stay in touch throughout the job, treat their property with respect, and fix problems instead of causing them.
No matter if we're working inside schools, hospitals, office buildings, warehouses, government facilities, entertainment venues, or commercial campuses, our approach is always the same.
Protect the customer.
Protect the equipment.
Complete the work safely.
Leave the site better than we found it.
Protecting a Piece of Movie History
One of the surprising highlights of this project was encountering some of the original 35mm projection systems that once brought countless movies to life.
Well before streaming services and digital cinema, these machines created lasting experiences for generations of moviegoers.
Standing beside them gave our crew a real appreciation for how much technology has advanced over the years.
It's not every day that a moving company has the chance to help retire a small piece of entertainment history.
For us, it really was a moment we will never forget.
